OUR STORY

BUILT FROM A LIFETIME
WITH BEES

HiveGuard was born from a simple idea — to give bees better protection and a safer future in the face of growing threats.

HOW IT STARTED

From a young interest to a lifelong passion

My introduction to bees began when I was only 9 years old, after a house move from Wiltshire to Cornwall.

Our new neighbour kept a single hive of bees in the corner of his field. He convinced me one day to do them with him, I remember it well. From that day on I was hooked.

I am now in my 55th year of working with these amazing creatures. I have kept them as a hobby and also as a successful honey farming business. Lately I have reduced my stocks and concentrate on queen rearing.

With more time on my hands, I decided to look into the problems that have affected bees, beekeepers and beekeeping as a whole over my career.

“The HiveGuard was born from a simple idea — to give bees better protection and a safer future.”

THE CHALLENGE

A closer look at what was needed

Over the years I have lost many hives to robbing, wasps, hornets and mice. I felt there must be a better way to protect our hives.
I spent a long time studying the bees and how they defend their entrance. I decided that the normal entrance at the bottom of the hive was ok in the summer, but as soon as summer turned to autumn the conventional entrance didn’t help the bees at all when the colony was put under pressure from other unwanted intruders.

THE SOLUTION

A new entrance for all seasons

The hive needed a new entrance, one that could run alongside the original entrance and protect the colony fully in the autumn, winter and spring and then work alongside the main entrance in the summer.
